A note about ongoing fees
I do not charge ongoing fees for the websites I build. Once it’s built, it’s yours! However, just as living in a house requires you to pay the electric bill in order to keep the lights on, owning a website requires you to pay two ongoing charges as standard:
Web hosting: Think of this as your rent for living in a virtual property. Web hosts charge different amounts based on the level of services, but for a basic website, expect to pay between £2 ($3 USD) and £8 ($10 USD) per month.
Domain registration: In order to maintain yourdomain.com, you need to pay the domain registrar an annual fee, usually about £15–20 ($20–30 USD) per year.
I request that my clients pay these two charges, web hosting and domain registration, direct to the companies that provide these services. This is so that you remain in complete control of your website. (By contrast, some less-than-ethical web designers will act as an intermediary and charge you the web hosting/domain costs plus their own fee.)
Here’s what you can expect as standard
An SEO-focused website built to score well on Google
Who wants a beautiful website that no one can find? SEO (search engine optimisation), i.e. getting to the top of Google searches, is extremely important. This is why I’ll ensure your website has the content and website structure to perform well on search engines.
Email newsletter functionality
Email marketing, via a monthly newsletter, is one of the most effective forms of author marketing. I’ll ensure your website makes it easy for your readers to sign up to your e-newsletter. The Classic and Premium website packages also include functionality for “reader magnet” bonus content, such as extra chapters and free ebooks, which will “unlock” with a newsletter sign-up. (Find out more about email marketing and creating a “reader magnet”.)
A WordPress website that runs on the most popular technology
I am a website designer who builds websites using open-source WordPress.org software. Why? Well, the fact that 43% of the internet runs on WordPress says something.
Look “under the hood” of a WordPress website and you’ll find it incredibly intuitive. Once WordPress websites are built correctly, they’re simple enough for a layperson (or even a technophobe) to update themselves. If you get stuck, there’s a community of literally millions of other users out there to give you the answer.
Confused about the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org websites? Let me explain.
Tutorials that make it easy to update your own website
Once it’s built, your website should belong to you, not me. I want to empower you to be able to update your own website at no further cost. That’s why I provide step-by-step PDF guides on how to make simple changes to your website.
For more complex websites, including those with blogging functionality, I’ll also offer you a friendly one-hour video call, where I’ll talk through how to update your website, as well as answering any questions.
Websites that are built to last…
You’re looking for timeless, uncluttered design that won’t look dated a year (or even five years) from now. You also want a robust website that will stay stable and secure for years to come. I will create for you a website that looks great and performs well both today and in the future.
…and can be upgraded at any point
However, if there comes a time when you’d like a website upgrade, that will be both possible and affordable. If you’re just starting out as an author and choose a Simple website (see above), you can always upgrade to a Classic or Premium website at a later date. You’ll only pay the difference, rather than paying all over again. This is useful for when first-time authors become seasoned pros with several books to promote.
I know you’re short on time, which is why I’ve made it incredibly easy to get started.
